What to do
After a storm, in order
Make it safe and stop the water
Deal with anything actively leaking or hazardous first. Move what you can out of harm's way and photograph the inside damage as you go.
Document before you clean up
Photos and video of the damage as it is, before anything is repaired or hauled off. Debris that is already gone is hard to claim later.
Get an inspection
Have the roof and exterior looked at by someone who will put findings in writing. Ours is free and does not obligate you to file or to hire us.
File and follow the process
Contact your carrier, keep every document, and take notes on every call. The written scope from the inspection goes in that file.
Worth being clear about
What a contractor can and cannot do on your claim
We can inspect the property, document the damage, write a scope of repair, and be there when the adjuster walks it. That is normal contractor work and it is genuinely useful to you.
We cannot negotiate your claim for you or advise you on your policy's coverage. In Texas that is public adjusting and it requires a separate license. Anyone promising to "handle the whole claim" for you should be able to show you that license.
We also will not tell you a roof is totaled when it is not. If the honest answer is a repair, that is what the scope will say.
Questions
Storm damage questions
What Hays County homeowners ask after hail or high wind.
What should I do first after hail or wind damage?
Deal with anything actively leaking or hazardous, then photograph the damage before anything is cleaned up or hauled off. Debris that is already gone is hard to claim later. After that, get the roof and exterior inspected by someone who will put their findings in writing.
Does a storm damage inspection cost anything?
No. The inspection is free, includes photographs of anything found, and comes with a written scope you can put in your claim file. It does not obligate you to file a claim or to hire Huron.
Can Huron handle my insurance claim for me?
No, and be wary of anyone who says they can. Huron documents the damage, writes a scope of repair, and can meet your adjuster at the property. Negotiating a claim on your behalf is public adjusting, which requires a separate licence in Texas.
Will you tell me my roof is totaled when it isn't?
No. If the honest answer is a repair rather than a replacement, that is what the written scope will say. Plenty of roofs need a section of flashing or a handful of shingles instead of a full tear-off.
How soon can someone come out after a storm?
After a hail event every roofer in the county is booked out, so the honest answer depends on volume at the time. Request an estimate and you will be given a real date rather than a comfortable one.
Still deciding? Request a free estimate — it costs nothing and commits you to nothing.
